How dark will blockout curtains make the room?
Triple-pass blockout stops light passing through the fabric itself. What no curtain can do on its own is stop light getting in around the edges: a little always finds its way past the sides, the top or the floor line, and how much depends on the reveal, the returns and where the track sits.
That is why we look at returns and track options at the measure, and recommend a fabric weight for the darkness you are after. For a nursery or a shift worker's bedroom we set it up to keep those edge gaps as tight as the room allows, and we tell you upfront what is realistic.
The same rules decide how much a curtain helps with heat and cold. To insulate, it has to run wider than the window frame, drop below the sill (to the floor is better) and sit close to the glass. Leave gaps and warm air slides down behind the curtain and pours out underneath. It won't replace double glazing or external roller shutters, but fitted properly it makes a real difference to a west-facing bedroom. Why cheap blockout curtains don't last
Most cheap blockout curtains use one thin acrylic coat on the back of a light fabric. Hang that in a west-facing Melbourne bedroom and within a year the coating starts going chalky, flaking and peeling, most visibly where the curtain rubs the window ledge. You end up with a curtain that lets light through, white residue on the glass, and the same job to pay for twice.

Headings, tracks and how you open them
Blockout works with most headings, and the heading changes the look more than anything else. S-fold (Wavefold) gives even, modern folds; pinch pleat is tailored and classic; eyelet hangs from a rod; and gathered is soft and relaxed. We bring samples so you can see each one in your own light.
Tracks come single or dual, and on a square-set ceiling they can sit neatly against the ceiling line. Builder-supplied tracks are usually rated for the curtain weight only, not for extra load like fairy lights or decorations, so if you want a track that can take more, we can specify a heavier-duty one at the measure.
You can draw them by hand, with a wand, or fit a motorised track. Motorisation is about convenience: wide or high windows, a set routine, closing the house up from bed. It doesn't make a blockout curtain any warmer or darker. The fabric and the fit do that. For a window you can reach easily, hand-drawn is fine and saves you the motor.
